Depression is often referred to as ‘The Black Dog’. It’s not a phrase I had heard of before but it is very well-known to mental health sufferers.
I and a number of my friends all have a dog called Spot. He is our white dog to protect us from the Black Dog. We can carry him round with us not only as a protection but as a reminder that each of us has a Spot. In times of anxiety, I have held Spot tightly in my hand and really felt that I had my friends with me so I wasn’t going it alone. Something so simple but so comforting.
The good news is nobody is born sad, negative, shy, full of self loathing, anxious or a failure. We are all a product of our environment. By changing our environment (or thought processes) things can get better and become more manageable.
